Thomas

I would try upgrading the firmware. Note that there are two firmwares: One for the motherboard and one for the extruder controller. There should be a separate USB cable attached for firmware upgrade of the extruder controller (and marked as such). Makerbot actually supports Thing-o-matics in their new MakerWare software. I would recommend giving that a try: http://www.makerbot.com/support/thingomatic/documentation/makerware/ -Marius
I tried this today as well, but no success… Firmware version 3.1 (the latest) did not solve the problem, the i flashed an older version (before a change in the toolhead-protocol), but this did not change anything either. Thomas Am 09.09.2013 um 20:26 schrieb Marius Kintel <marius@kintel.net>:

Hm, I'm confused: You wrote that the stepper motors and stepper drivers are OK - how did you test that if the extruder stepper doesn't move? -Marius
I attached the signal-wires of the y-axis to the driver-board of the extruder. Using the replicatorG-control panel, I sent commands to move the y-axis, which - in reality - moved the stepper motor of the extruder. Therefore i know that both the stepper motor and the driver-board work. I hope this is understandable… Thomas Am 09.09.2013 um 20:44 schrieb Marius Kintel <marius@kintel.net>:

Perfect. Did you manage to test any of the extruder controller functions (like heating), to further debug the issue, or does it appear as if the extruder controller simply doesn't communicate with the motherboard. I think that the motherboard will report the extruder controller version on startup on the serial port. Unfortunately, the protocol is binary so it's a bit tricky to debug without using RepG or MakerWare.. -Marius
Heating and regulation of the fan both work. Thomas Am 09.09.2013 um 20:58 schrieb Marius Kintel <marius@kintel.net>:

Rethinking my previous email: AFAIR, all axes are driven from the motherboard on this revision of the electronics, meaning that the issue is somewhere else. I'd check: o Is the extruder stepper holding torque (to check if it's actually powered) ? I think it should be holding torque at all times when the machine is running o The extruder could refuse to move if the temperature of the nozzle isn't high enough. Could you verify that the temperature reading is good and that the nozzle heats properly? A very common failure mode of Thing-o-matics is that the heating resistors on the extruder burn out. -Marius

A very common failure mode of Thing-o-matics is that the heating resistors on the extruder burn out. today, i did not heat the extruder at all, but last time i did heat it to approx. 225°C, and the extruder did not work… maybe the temperature was too low?

Another idea: Early versions of the Thing-o-matic used a DC motor for the extruder. In later versions, they switched to a stepper extruder. This must be configured somewhere, but I have forgotten where. -Marius
I selected the driver "Thing-O-Matic w/ Extruder MK5" btw: thanks for caring Thomas Am 09.09.2013 um 21:22 schrieb Marius Kintel <marius@kintel.net>:
