I’m looking to get an e-scooter to get myself around Vienna, and I figure there are probably some knowledgable metalab'ers that have some already pretty well formed opinions on the different models out there - does anyone have one that they’d recommend as a good all-around Vienna-friendly scooter? I’d be using it to commute every day into the city, and my distance will be about 16 km’s .. Also - Are there any decent e-scooter retail shops in Vienna worth checking out, anyone know? ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com
There are the "Bird" and "Tier" rental electric scooters that you can find here, I think you have to install an app on your smartphone to use them or something On Fri, 7 Dec 2018, 12:20 AM Jay Vaughan <seclorum@icloud.com wrote:

What i heared from the pricing, you can probably buy the whole company after a year if you need to drive 32km per day on the rental ones... Near TU there was a shop selling these hoverboards, not sure if they have switched to Scooters... Maybe worth a try. Am 7. Dezember 2018 00:50:11 MEZ schrieb Carmatic frua <carmatic@gmail.com>:

Yeah, I don’t want to use the rental services - rather, I want to buy the scooter outright. I’ve pretty much settled on the Dualtron Spider, but I’m hoping maybe someone has other better ideas in Vienna? https://www.scootersg.com/products/dualtron-spider-europe-version ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com
why is the spider 10 times more expensive than the ones at a discounter? Am Fr., 7. Dez. 2018 um 08:40 Uhr schrieb Jay Vaughan <seclorum@icloud.com>:

I’m guessing quality? Not sure. It does have a lot of features you don’t see on a discounted model, such as front and rear drum brakes, high quality battery .. ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com
isn't standing on such a scooter way too uncomfortable for 15km? for that distance i would rather get something like a xiaomi qicycle or a sondors fold mini (probably better if you are tall). On Fri, Dec 7, 2018 at 9:24 AM Jay Vaughan <seclorum@icloud.com> wrote:

It’ll be fine, I sit all day anyway .. but thanks for the suggestion, those are also good options. What I’d really like is to go see what’s available here in stores in Vienna .. seems like I have to just find a few of the shops and go check it out. Anyone considered a DIY option? A pity we lost the electric-skateboard project, alas .. ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com
Anyone considered a DIY option?
I am not 100% sure if this qualifies as a DIY option, but modifying one of those lime/bird/uber/?? electric scooters and replacing the electronics is on my TODO list. One day..

Yeah, I’ve been eying them with keen interest for the same reason .. I’ve since learned that Lime/Bird are not the OEM’s of these things, that they are in fact a re-brand of the Xiaomi M365 and Segway Ninebot scooters, so .. just for the record, we don’t have to deconstruct a Bird or Lime ..

Yes, that is awful, truly. And to think I would have voluntarily helped fund his project given the opportunity. I seriously want an electric means of getting in and out of the city .. so in case anyone else wants to jump on the scooter bandwagon, and come up with a Metalab variant, maybe this is something for consideration in the future .. ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com
I actually recently acquired a few of those motors from ripper with the intent of building a cart that lets me carry stuff from Obi to my workshop. I guess the motor control stuff should be pretty universal, but I have yet to look into it, if I would want to build it myself or just buy something off the shelf from ebay. An open source scooter would be the tits. Like, seriously cool. Also, I'm currently learning to TIG weld :P (but I have no clue about mechanics) Am Fr., 7. I’ve been making RC planes for decades, and have a bit of experience with the ESC’s for the new-school motors that have hit the scene in the last few years .. maybe there’s some knowledge there we can crossover ..

Thanks for googling for me! :) Will investigate this option as well. Maybe 500Euro’s worth of parts will get a bad-ass DIY option on the workbench soon, lets see .. ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com

hi! I started a unicycle project some years ago but abandoned it due to lack of time and motivation. Its not like the one from Aliexpress but with a handle bar. I can bring it to the lab if someone is interested.

I have tested all models of the rentals available in Vienna. And I strongly root for the Xiaomi m365, as it is the only one with air tires. And that makes the hell of a difference. Full rubber tires kill your back quickly! The only problem, that I have with the m365 is power. It is not as strong uphill a s the others. But maybe some addon battery is available, which might resolve that problem as well. The current LIME model sucks for its breaks. The recuperation is not tied to the actual break. So you need to hop on the backwheel as well and can not break with hand handles alone!!! Markus Am Fr., 7. Dez. 2018 um 00:20 Uhr schrieb Jay Vaughan <seclorum@icloud.com>:

This is not so much of an issue for me, since most of my route into the city is a nice smooth bike-path (Donau Insel -> Donau Kanal -> Gurtel) .. and as far as I can tell, the ES2 is the only one with cruise control - which for that distance is going to be kind of crucial. No point exacerbating carpal tunnel before I get to the desk. ;) But, good to know about the tires.

This is another thing in the favour of the ES2: easy add-on battery accessory.

Ah, this is very good to know. I guess I’m going to have to test-drive them all as well .. I think the ES2 has regenerative braking though, also? That seems like a must-have for the eco-conscious at least .. ; -- Jay Vaughan seclorum@icloud.com
