ich glaub, wenn es gründe wie "schüler/student"-sein gibt, wende dich am besten direkt an microsoft österreich … die geben lizenzen dann eh billig ab. h PS: {{consider open source alternatives template}}

One of my first professional development jobs in the early 80's was to make a Hazeltine HZ1500 terminal emulator for MSDOS so that my client could migrate from a massively deployed terminal-based mainframe computer system, where everyone had to have a HZ1500 (they were getting hard to buy even back then), to cheap and 'powerful' MSDOS machines on every desk. The idea being they'd still have their HZ1500 interface to the mainframe, but could then move over to running applications on the local PC's for their users as well. This was a lucrative project, and I fondly remember the days when "network-based computing is going to be replaced by computing power on every desk that will make the mainframe redundant". The idea was really appealing: users could have their own data locally, would be responsible for their own backups (the machines had floppy drives) and so on.. reducing the load and expense of maintaining a full-blown computer operations center with support staff and all that. It was neat. And now, here we are again, brains the sizes of planets, sitting in our pockets. Oh, by the way, we want to take away all that nasty 'local user has control/responsibility' thing and move things back .. out .. into .. "the cloud" .. well, they call it the cloud, but I know what it really is: mainframe-style, operator-controlled, dumb-terminal computing, the user has no responsibilities for their data any more. Just like it used to be. All over again. The older I get, the more I realize that the computer business is a huge scam. ; -- Jay Vaughan

I'm 43. I was one of those annoying teenagers in the 80's who had far, far too many mad skills for the time in comparison with my peers. I notch it up to having not much else to do in the Australian outback than try to get my Oric-1 (1983) to dial up some random BBS that had copies of all the game tapes we didn't have in the Australian market .. and when that failed, having to write my own godamn software for the thing. (Also: got banned for phone bills.) I got my first professional job writing software at 13. It was a laser control system for one of my Dads' friends nightclubs. It used a C64 wired up to a speaker to make programmed lissajous patterns .. the 80's clubbers went mad for it. ;) Made too much money on things like that, so I dropped out of high school at 16, moved to LA, wrote terminal emulators and game systems and database apps for MSDOS, then device drivers and filesystems and daemons and things for MIPS Risc/OS, and then Internet junk for SGI Irix and Win98/NT (blech!) for 10 years, Internet bubble/burnout blah blah, then music software for Yamaha for 5 years, moved to Germany at 32, worked for a synth company there for 5 years doing embedded firmware/Linux r&d, been here in Vienna for 6, almost 7 years now. Hope that explains my antiquity .. ;) Yeah, there was a period in the 80's when I was super-productive, about on par with you young guys these days. Don't waste your youth - if you're going to hack, hack hard so you can chill when you hit 30. I wish I'd chilled when I hit 30. I'm doing it now, which is why you might think I'm younger than I am. Anyway, thanks for the interest. :) ; -- Jay Vaughan

So surprised how much cultural validity that movie has propagated in the realm of hackerdom .. I was really cringing through that whole era. I hate it that FSN was actually a real thing shipping on SGI machines, but yet because of Jurassic Park, "3d file management" = lolz. I still have an Atari Portfolio "for hacking ATM machines on the run", also. Actually, I only have it because its got a working C compiler onboard, and if the zombies thing happens, I'll at least be able to keep my coding chops up with scavenged AA batteries in between decaps. I don't know anyone else who has a computer with an onboard C compiler that will run on plain old coppertops .. :) Anyway I should probably just start a blog and leave you guys alone. Meh. ; -- Jay Vaughan
