Hi Dimitriu! thanks for your great email. I will forward your email to our intern List and the list of the chaos computer club Wien and ask if there also people interested for the workshop. I think there is for sure some demand by a group of people for such a workshop! All the best, Hetti On 2018-06-20 15:42, Cornel-Florentin Dimitriu wrote:
Hello,
I was in Metalab at the beginning of June, I've talked to some people, and even held an ad-hoc presentation :-) Thanks for the warm welcome!
Back then, I presented what Technoethical does - mainly replacing the proprietary BIOS on compatible ThinkPad laptops with Libreboot, and installing Replicant on compatible Samsung phones, and how through this we have found a way to earn a living while still working on libre technologies.
See more info here about the projects we use:
Related to this, we want to promote libre software and compatible hardware more, and to collaborate with people in hackerspaces and event organizers, to deliver workshops there.
Since I come regularly (a few times a year) to Vienna, we can organize Libreboot (Coreboot) and Replicant workshops if there are interested people.
I can give more details about what the workshop will consist of, if you need it, but mainly it's about:
- for laptops, and Libreboot - flashing the chip where the BIOS is stored, using an external SPI programmer and a clip (or soldered wires),
- for phones, and Replicant - flashing a recovery image and installing a system zip, using a micro USB cable, and then connecting to Internet with an external WiFi adapter that has libre driver+firmware.
I will be in Vienna again at the beginning of July, which is quite soon, so I'm waiting for feedback, to see how big the interest is, then we can set up a date for it.
Thank you again for welcoming me! It was the second time I was in Metalab (the first time I was two years ago), and by the projects, devices around, and the overall feeling, it seemed like the way I would've done it, so I can say I felt quite like home. :-)
Have a good week, and great ideas and projects ahead!
