I had two cavities treated. One on the side of a molar and one between a molar and a premolar. If i remember correctly (its been a while now) i payed around 60 euros, in the one instance where i payed cash. This may be more interesting to Yvan: The second time i used my european health insurance card (issued by a member state) and did not pay anything at all, so it went directly to my state-issued insurance. I can only speak against Dentalklinik Margareten: I had some work done there, and twice out of two the cavity filling fell out in a 2 year range. The dentist i'm at now [not in Vienna, so unrelevant] judged the work there to have been horrible. I'm not sure who treated me there, but they treated me in under 10 minutes and it feels like being in a factory rather than in a dentist. Perhaps Dr. Marinova does a better job than the docs who treated me.

An x-ray will cost you less than 40EUR, a half hour work will probably be around 70-100EUR, depending if you need any material beyond a pain injection. If you need just a bit of drilling + filling, you should get away with <150EUR total, I'd wager it's even <100EUR. You can also tell them about your situation with your european health insurance card, and that you'll need a few days to have it sent to you, and the dentists secretary will then lay away your money as "collateral" which you'll get back as soon as you bring your EHIC.
Mind you: with EHIC you'll always pay the country's local fees for a procedure (in case of austrian dentistry, next to nothing), the real cost of which will be billed to your origin insurance - if the procedures are not covered by your origin's insurance, you may get a bill from them ...
TLDR; phone in, ask what they'll accept as collateral, bring that, then tell them that you'll bring by your EHIC, then do it, get your money back.
Oh, and I can recommend Dentalklinik Margarethen. Ask for Dr. Marinova if you can, she really knows what she's doing.

Even the best implants are not half a substitute for an own tooth !
take your documents - insurance, whatever you have - and go to Zahnklinik and tell them how terribly you suffer. Even when you have no insurance at all - when you suffer they cannot send you away ! And the more you suffer and are able to show a painful face the faster its done, emergency cases do not have to wait ;-) And when you have no money at all then its free ! The worst case is that you go to Sozialamt and present the bill !
there is a rather cheap way to fix broken and sharp edges with a kind of "half-crown", thats a white liquid-material (instead of Amalgam) that fixes within minutes and they can form a kind of natural tooth from up to 2/3 of the volumne of your (missing) own one .. and its much cheaper, between 20 and 50 Euro (crown costs around 1500,- til endless ... ) Our Krankenkassa does not cover this (they still pay only Amalgam) but its worth to pay this. Its called an intermediate solution but mine worked longer than the expensive one !
In Russia they work on a project to influence the roots of teeth to create new ones for a lifetime, like crocodiles ! In theory it already works so there is a chance for you some day ;-)

Well... it doesn't really hurt a lot - I've been through more severe pains (the last time I went to an emergency visit to the dentist I burned myself on purpose to distract myself from the pain), and this tooth has it's nerve removed. The biggest problem is the sharp edge cutting in my tonge and me being unable to pronounce half of my vocabulary anymore.
It's really painful not to be able to curse anymore.
