Re: [Metalab] URL-encoded SMS message sending?
there are tons of commercial sms gateways doing things like email/http/xml to sms. additionally there are free gateways provided by mobile carrieres, but they weren't reliable when i played with them a few years ago and you can't address all networks. some carrier gateways: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/email-to-sms/ well, and since you asked for http get i think hosting your own sms gateway is a good option: http://www.kannel.org/. kannel is simply cool and works very well. lg, amir On Fri, 28 Jan 2011 11:48:13 +0100, Metalab General Discussion List <metalab@lists.metalab.at> wrote:
Hiya Metalab'ers,
Does anyone know of a way to send an SMS using a 3rd party provider by way of URL encoded details? Something like:
http://someproviderofsms.com/send_sms?message=Greetz%20Human+number=5551212
Is there any local (to Austria) provider of this sort of SMS gateway service that you might recommend, which allows this style of message-sending easily (i.e. without requiring an account and all that rubbish)?
I'm developing an iPhone app that needs to be able to send an SMS message without user interaction and the best (for me right now) would be the URL-encoded message style .. anyone know of a local provider? (Local, so that it is quickly sent to Austrian numbers..) I've looked at sms.at, but it seems that I'd have to send POST details .. or .. ?

It depends on the amount of messages and time you'd like to invest, basically here are your three options: *) One option would be to ask austrian mobile providers for a "SMS-Large-Account" (IP connection to a SMSC), which might be the cheapest option for larger volumes. *) If you are looking for smaller volumes and don't want to invest much time in building your own gateway, I can recommend Multi-Tech, they build small GSM appliances, which provide a HTTP API interface: http://www.multitech.com/en_US/PRODUCTS/Families/MultiModemiSMS/ http://www.multitech.net/developer/ I bought one from Sphinx Computer [http://www.s-connect.at/] for my previous employer. *) Another option would be, to just get an old cell-phone with a serial/usb cable connected to your linux box and tread it with Gammu/SMSD. http://www.gammu.org Which also works fine if you choose the right hardware and might be the best option if you cannot to rely on your network for messaging (eg. your monitoring system). Regards, Stefan.
