I think you mean 3.6.2014 and 10.6.2014 right?

Hello!

Thanks for participating in the first Git workshop session yesterday! Next time we will start "projects" in small groups to slowly get into practicing techniques and workflows. The second session will be in 2 weeks, on Tuesday 10.5.2014, 19:00 (and I'll be a bit better prepared for such a large group). :)

I'd like to invite everyone not quite familiar with single-user Git workflows to come to a small "beginner workshop" where we can practice everything for 1 or 2 hours. Lets meet next week on Tuesday 3.5.2014, 19:00 in the Metalab Library.

Thanks to everyone contributing to the shared PiratePad (really cool to see notes and questions being collected in the background), and to Phileas and the others who cleaned up the shared PiratePad (now in our workshop repo: https://github.com/metachris/metalab-git-workshop/blob/master/NOTES-2014-05-27.md).

Also, we got mailing list: git-workshop@lists.metalab.at! All future Git workshop communication will happen there, so please sign up (https://lists.metalab.at/mailman/listinfo/git-workshop).

Finally I'd like to collect a little bit of feedback. If you have a few minutes, filling out this 5 question survey would be appreciated: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KHDY25J

Cheers,
Chris

If you want something to practice, try to update your git-workshop fork with the new upstream changes. If you want to exercise more, try this:

1. Create a local repo and make a few commits
2. Create 2 new branches where you make commits, then merge everything into master
3. Create a test Github repository, add this remote to your local git repository, and push your changes
4. Create a feature branch with a few commits
5. Push the feature branch to Github
6. On the Github web interface, create a pull request for your feature branch to master

More exercises: http://jnthn.net/training/git/exercises.pdf

Feel encouraged to chat about the exercises on the git-workshop@lists.metalab.at mailing list

Hello everyone!

Great to see so much interest in the Git workshop, and I'm looking forward to the first session on the upcoming Tuesday (27.5.2014, 19:00, Hauptraum). The part-1 session will cover the basics and some intermediate techniques; feel encouraged to come to this first session if you want to know more about Git!

So far about 25 people expressed their basic interest to attend, and I've been thinking long and hard how to do this workshop with a larger group. I think for the workshop to still be hands-on, we'll need to cap it at 15 people per evening and just repeat the part-1 session another evening with second group if there is enough interest.

If you want to attend, please let me know by attempting task 1 [1] (it's very easy)!

If need be we'll queue first come first serve with preferential queueing for members. If you'd like to attend the following, more advanced sessions, please come to a part-1 session as well (if you're bored you can help or just tune out : ).

Cheers,
Chris

Hello everyone!

A hands-on GIT workshop in two or more parts is happening! First evening will be Tue, 27.5.2014 (today in 2 Weeks). All skill levels are welcome -- if you are curious, feel invited to join!

About Me

I've been using GIT for about 6 years professionally, from small projects to open-source contributions to large production systems and deployment toolchains (eg. for MeetMe, one of the largest social networks in the USA with ~60mio members) and am fairly fluent with most GIT workflows. I'm happy to help people get a fun and efficient start with GIT.

My Jabber handle is metachris@jabber.metalab.at if you want to contact me via IM.

Feedback and ideas are appreciated!

Best regards,
- Chris
